Caye Caulker (feat. Bacalar)

Bacalar

Pretty cool, too hot, would go back.

Caye Caulker

Early morning wake up (practicing on day offs) at 5am after a night of no sleep. Off the bus stop where when we asked to buy a ticket he simply said “no entiendo” and we took that as I don’t get paid enough so get on. 7am waiting at the port, 3 hours of old men running laps up the jetty later we board. Filled with chocolate muffins and coffee bread we fight the sea sickness for the 2.5 hour boat ride into San Pedro Customs where we have a slow turn around standing with our bags in the sun as they try and make sense of a family of five for 30mins. Back on the boat for another half hour and we said wagwan to Caye Caulker.

Pretty wack room with no ac, proper windows and many people in tents outside. Didn’t let this stop us and we headed out with our  new Czech friend Vitech. We soon found that Spanish was useless here but creole was everywhere but the little we knew was only going to get us in trouble. After some aquatic activities we visited aunties (we ended up eating here everyday) for some poul embesil as the locals would say. Pub crawl at the neighbouring hostel later which turned out to be more of a quiet chit chat so we made like Croatia and Split.

Day 2

Another early rise but unplanned this time due to the lack of curtains/windows. Breakfast was fry jack then another dip where Charlie sat on a family of jellyfish. It looked very painful and he was very brave (he wrote this). Aunties again. Made an appearance at the sports bar where a local g checked me, didn’t let this stop us and continued in only to find every old overweight American ever in there so again we split.

Day 3

Up with the roosters again. Hopped on our E-Z boy tour boat and headed to the reefs. Saw some wild marine life, got up close and personal with some sharks n’ rays then got some free reign where we wound up in trouble for going into the shallow reef after we were told we could.

Came ashore and found Matt from Cancun who happened to be staying in our room. Aunties again. Catching wind of a boat party we were skeptical it would be another pub crawl situation but no it was pretty feral with unlimited rum punch on a series of unstable boats and shallow water. Unfortunately no one was harmed. Post boat we showered and prepared for attempt 2 at the sports bar where it was popping off. Bumped into Marc Purves (FH 15-20) in the bar. He was well.

There was promise of a great club after the bar but the Belizians had other ideas and informed us it was closed. So the only other option was a classic late night jump in the sea were only meters away there was a croc warning. Then back to our neighbour hostel for a debrief and then bed.

Off to the jungle …

Speak soon,

D
